OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Mathematics was started in 1986 offering B.Sc. Programmes with M.P.C. and M.P.E. Initially there were 48 students and the number of students opting Mathematics at UG level has been increased that led to an intake of 1161 students in 2018-19. The Department has extended its B.Sc. Programmes to MPCS in the year 1988-89 and offered MSCS and B.A. MSCA in the year 1998-99, the latter was converted to B.Sc. MSCA in 2010-11. Keeping in view the present-day job scenario, the department has increased the number of programmes by introducing B.Sc. Honours and MCCS in 2017-18 and B.Sc. MSDS from the academic year 2019 -20. According to the National Education Policy 2020, a four-year degree programme B.Sc. Honours (Mathematics) is introduced from the academic year 2023-24.

Department Achievements:
The Department has been headed by Smt.S. SudhaVani since 2000 to till date and under her guidance the department has been blessed with tremendous achievements. Among dedicated members of the department, Smt. V. Jyothi has been awarded Ph.D. in January, 2019; Smt. M. Dhanalakshmi has been awarded Ph.D. in the year 2020 and Smt. Mohana Rupa S.V.D. has been awarded Ph.D. in 2022. Smt. P. V. Durgavathi, is pursuing Ph.D. from Krishna University. The department continuously encourages its members and students towards research and hosts Workshops, FDPs, Seminars both regionally and nationally and are motivated to participate and present papers in State and National Seminars.
Members of the department are ever ready to inculcate knowledge in students and aim to score 100% results. Slow learners are identified, and with remedial classes are conducted and assignments are regularly assigned to them.
Students take active part in exposing their talents through participating in the competitions on and off the campus. Students bagged many prizes over the years and their efforts were applauded.
For the enrichment of knowledge, students and staff are encouraged to join in NPTEL courses.
An enormous number of Alumnae are serving in much esteemed positions and few of them are Prof. G. Hari Priya, IIT Bombay, Smt. M.V.D.N.S Madhavi, Associate Professor VRSEC, Santhi Kamal, TCS, Hyderabad, and A. Madhuri, Associate Professor, PVPSEC.
BEST PRACTICES:
- Under the guidance of the members of the department, students published articles during 2018-19.
- The best practice of the department in teaching and evaluation is usage of Apps like Plickers and Kahoot in evaluating the performance of students in conducting classroom quizzes.
- Besides academics, the department constantly involves in extension activities like ‘Akshaya Patra’ which was inaugurated in 2016 with one class of students, which has now grown with the co-operation of 20 more sections. Under this event, students collect rice, dal, vegetables, cook and distribute the food to the needy. This activity is taken up once a month.
- Students of Mathematics contribute one rupee a month and amount collected is sent to “Save the Children” organization every year. This activity promotes charity among students.
- The Department has an MOU with WOW (Well-being Out of Waste) under which students donate old books, newspapers, magazines etc., for recycling and the new books received are distributed to the economically backward students.
GANITHA CLUB ACTIVITIES:
In memory of Sri Srinivasa Ramanujan, National Mathematics Day is celebrated on the 22nd day of December every year. Celebrations of one week takes place where many Intra and Inter Collegiate Competitions were conducted. The Department was in lead to conduct competitions like spot photography, best short film competitions on the campus in 2015, and a huge response was received from students of different colleges.
Innovative Activities:
In Mega Maths Mania – 2015, magic square dance, an innovative item received overwhelming response and the Maths Fashion Show in 2016, 2017 made the audience spell bound. The Department has been coming out with innovative ideas and encouraging students to take active part in the events on the campus and off the campus.
