DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY
Zoology, the subject that helps in acquiring a great insight into the animal world, deals with the structure, behaviour, life and environment of animals and their adaptations to the changing environment and their needs. It also focuses on the advanced techniques and tools in exploring the mysterious depths of the kingdom.
The Department of Zoology came into existence as one of the core subjects of the undergraduate programme B.Sc., BZC (Botany, Zoology and Chemistry) in 1986. Until 2002 the Department offered academic instruction on Annual Evaluation Pattern following the curriculum framed by the affiliating university. Since 2003 the college being conferred with autonomous status, the Department shifted its instruction pattern to Semester System. With the flexibility of designing the curriculum, the Department has made remarkable progress ensuring the curriculum upgraded with recent trends and need based topics. With the introduction of CBCS in 2005-2006, the Department introduced skill oriented courses as electives. Institutional Autonomy paved way for the Department to introduce Add-on Courses to empower the students with career-oriented /employable skills to face the emerging challenges in the job market. With the introduction of Cluster System by the University in 2017-2018, the Department offered Aquaculture and Medical Diagnostics as Cluster Electives and Immunology and Bioinformatics as Domain Electives for the III year students in Semester-VI.
The Department stood as the pioneer among the private autonomous colleges in the state to introduce a new programme B.Sc., AZC (Aquaculture Technology, Zoology and Chemistry) clinching the opportunity of the focus of the Government on developing Fishery Industry in the newly formed State.
The focus of the Department over the years has been to empower the students with self – sustainable/ employable skills besides imparting the basic and advanced concepts in various fields of animal biology. Working in this direction the Department promotes activities like Projects, Internships, Hands –on Training Workshops, Awareness Programmes etc. Students are encouraged to take active part in maintaining Vermicomposting Unit, Mulberry Garden and Ornamental Fish Breeding Unit on the campus.
The Department also organizes Guest Lectures, Seminars and Interaction Programmes inviting eminent scholars and professors across India and abroad to keep abreast of latest advancements in life sciences.
Field Visits are made part of the curriculum to provide the students with first- hand information on the activities in the field. Study Tours to the state and central institutes of research are arranged to motivate and inspire the students towards higher education and research.
The Department has functional MoUs with industries and organizations. The Department promotes inter-departmental activities in order to nurture the co- operative learning among students.
Faculty takes keen interest in academic enrichment through participating and presenting papers in local, state and national level seminars and conferences and publishing articles in national and international journals.
As seminars provide a forum for scientific exchange, students are encouraged to participate in the academic fests and present papers, posters and models in other colleges.
A well-equipped library with 300 books, bio-visual charts, Virtual Lab, well maintained collection of specimens in the museum, fully equipped laboratory, a Computer System with Printer, LCD Projector and Wi - Fi facilities provide learning resources in the Department.
The Department takes steps towards the concept of blended learning through flipped classrooms. “Practice and Promote” as the motto the faculty initiated MOOCs NPTEL under SWAYAM platform motivating students to pursue online certificate courses.
Classroom Seminars, Assignments, preparing Flash Cards, Models and Charts Quiz, Student and Faculty Exchange Programmes, Extension Activities are regular practices of the Department.
The Department is regular in conducting Parent –Teacher Meets, Bridge Course and Remedial Coaching for slow learners and Career Counselling to students. The academic performance of the students is monitored regularly through the Tutor - Ward System.
