DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
English is a global language that crosses continents, cultures and industries. It is a common tongue for divergent people with multilingual and multicultural differences. Being the language of science, it is essential for building a career in MNCs, Science and Technology. In this context, teaching English is truly rewarding. Students of English have many opportunities in higher education as well as professions globally.
Internet use is now an important part of many jobs. The home pages on the internet contain all the information in English. Hence netizens need to know English language. Teaching English to people means helping them to take full advantage of the power of the web.
Faculty
The English Department is academically strong with two Ph. D holders, two M. Phil holders and two pursuing Ph. D and M.Phil. The faculty is devoted to enrich themselves by acquiring higher qualification, by attending International Seminars and also strive for the holistic development of the students. Language skill development through experiential learning is the overall teaching-learning approach of the faculty. The faculty are members in ISCS, AIEA, and ELTAI.
The faculty is very well aware of students’ predicament in understanding and speaking English. The faculty adopts humanistic approach in teaching English to students of cultural and lingual diversity classroom. They dispel fears and inhibitions of the students and inculcate interest for English.
Dr.M. Nailini, Principal: She had been HOD of the Department for 25 years and rendered excellent service as Academic Officer for 13 years. She took the charge as the Principal in July, 2018.
She received:
- The BEST TEACHER award from the A.P State Government on 5th September, 2018
- Awarded Certificate of Merit for rendering meritorious service in discharging the duties for year 2018 & 2019 from the District Collector.
- Received Indira Priyadarshini National award on 19th November, 2018.
- Received Best Citizen of India award for the year 2016 from The International Publishing House.
Faculty- the Master Trainers:
Faculty attended Train the Trainer programs conducted by APSCHE, INFOSYS and the British Council. The faculty also attended FDPs organized by different institutions. The faculty in turn trained the students for campus recruitments because of which many students were placed in reputed MNCs.
All the faculty are involved in various important committees like Cultural, IQAC, Literary, Magazine, News Letter, House Journal, Press Relations, Women’s Cell, Compeering Committee, Radio Mirchi, Discipline, Students Union, Staff Club, Academic Council.
In the present scenario, acquisition of professional skills is identified as the basic requirement for students to get through successfully in a competitive world where as Proficiency in English is suffice for general employability. Hence the focus of the Syllabus has been shifted from structure to situations, from chalk and talk to topics and tasks. It has also been made multidisciplinary, technologically adaptive and ecologically contextualized.
“Input cannot be equated with output and surely teaching cannot be equated with learning”.
The Department of English adopted Learner-Centered Approach, which is based on the student’s need. The student–teacher interface is just not Face to Face, but also activity oriented. However, the teacher retains the traditional role as a source of information and works with the students like a facilitator.
The Department of English established the Language Lab supported by autonomous learning software to facilitate experiential learning and cultivate skills necessary for employability.
The Language Lab
The Language Lab was established in 2005 as an integral part of the Department. The lab activities create multimedia learning environment where in optimal student engagement in collaborative and task based learning. Students are trained to use ICT tools to attain proficiency in Spoken English through interactive method. English movies are played in e-class room to learn accent and intonation and practice oral and aural skills.

Extension Activities:
The Department conducted various surveys under Community Outreach Activity to promote awareness regarding need of English in day-to-day activities among people of different categories.

- Survey on Illiterates – Rural Education
The faculty engaged advanced learners to teach basic grammar and communication skills at local government schools and Zilla Parishad schools at rural areas.
Community Outreach activities:

The department encouraged students to take up social service activities.
- They provided one day complete meal at Nirmala Sisu Sadan, Krishna Lanka,Vijayawada
- Distributed soaps, diapers, detergents, new clothes to infants
- Distributed sweets and stationery at Nava Jeevan Bala Bhavan, Near Railway Station, Vijayawada.
- Distributed sweets and stationery at Nava Jeevan Bala Bhavan, at Purnanandampet
- Distributed clothes and medicines at Old Age Home, Singh Nagar, Vijayawada.
- The Faculty provide economical support to the HIV affected children.

A number of in-house competitions are conducted for students to boost their confidence, refine their competence and acquire professional attitude for a holistic development.

The College Radio:
The Department has launched an innovative edutainment programme – Radio Mirchi in lunch hour which is a round-the-year activity, to lighten the stress built up during academic schedule.
The English Club: BLOSSOMS
The Club Blossoms trains the students to compeer all the events on the campus and also provides many opportunities to demonstrate their abilities by conducting competitions in the following events

The Department has collaborated with German Institute to offer Certificate Courses in Foreign Languages – and offered German and French language.

The Department of English conducts FDP to all the faculty in association with IQAC to acquire language skills.
