“The true alchemists do not change lead into gold, they change the world into words”
OVERVIEW:
The Department of Chemistry was established in 1986 and was adjudged the best department in the college for three years. Among the faculty of the department there is one Ph.D holder and one Prathibha awardee.
COURSES OFFERED:
- B.Sc PMC ( Physics, Mathematics & Chemistry)
- B.Sc BZC (Botany, Zoology & Chemistry)
- B.Sc FMC ( Food& Nutrition, Microbiology & Chemistry)
- B.Sc MCCS ( Mathematics, Chemistry& Computer Science)
- B.Sc AZC ( Aqua culture, Zoology & Chemistry)
- B.Sc Honours Chemistry
The department which was started with 95 students (PMC&BZC) in 1986 has become strong with 750 students opting chemistry at UG level in 2019-20.
INFRASTRUCTURE:
The department maintains library. The department has well equipped laboratories and instrumentation room with latest equipment like UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Potentiometer, Colorimeter, Conductometer and Distillation plant.
RAINBOW WEEK:
Students take active part in exposing their talents through participating in the competitions on and off the campus and bagged many prizes over the years. To encourage this, the department has been conducting Rainbow Week to identify the talents of the students. This programme is conducted exclusively for chemistry students. The competitions conducted through this programme are Elocution, Debate, Just A Minute (JAM), Essay Writing, Group Discussion, Power Point Presentation, Cartoon Chemistry, Poster Making, Collage, Name The Lab Equipment, Model Presentation, Chemical Thambola etc. Based on their performance in these events and the studies, Student Quality Circles are formed and identified a group of advanced learners from all the chemistry sections.
Slow learners are also identified, remedial classes are conducted and assignments are regularly assigned to score 100% results.
PROJECTS:
The department provided Hands on training on instrumentation in collaboration with Shree Icon Pharmaceutical Laboratories, Annoor laboratories (SPIIC), Vijayawada etc. The department has MOUs with many laboratories and institutions.
Students of Chemistry have done U.G.C minor research project on “Water Analysis”. They also submitted other projects such as Estimation of Casein in different samples of milk, Phytochemical composition of aqueous leaf extract, Estimation of acetic acid in different types of vinegar, Physical properties of petroleum and diesel, Estimation of magnesium ion in different samples of talcum powders and different projects on indicators and water analysis from different areas.
INTERNSHIPS:
Chemistry cluster students have done internships on Estimations of Omeprazole and Ondansetron in bulk and different capsule and different pharmaceutical dosage forms by using HPLC and UV methods. Students are also trained in different analytical instruments and software used in pharmaceutical industries.
INDUSTRIAL TRIPS:
Many industrial trips, surveys, case studies, innovative and inter departmental activities were also conducted for the benefit of the students.
ADD ON COURSE:
The department offered two Add on Courses Milk and processing of consumer products and Chemistry of Cosmetics. It is observed that the students while pursuing Add On Course, experiments have become more initiative, creative and organised while they are discussing the issues. This course enhanced their skills and helped the students in their studies, professions and lives.
ANALYTE CLUB
Extension activities:
To establish social concern and to magnify the overall personality development of the students the department inaugurated chemistry club ANALYTE. Through this club Social, Community service and many Environmental protection activities were done by the students.
Mobile laboratory:
The Chemistry club, Analyte identified that in the Government Municipal Corporation high schools the students are sharp but there are no laboratory facilities. So the faculty of the department studied their syllabus and guided III B.Sc students to show the experiments to the Municipal High School students. To inculcate scientific temper among the high school Students, our students were divided into 10 groups and explained different types of laboratory experiments with MOBILE LABORATORY. Under this concept of ‘Lab On Wheels’ the department has given practical orientation to the students of Boyapati Siva Rama Krishna Municipal High School, RCM Aided School, S.K.C.V.Vidya Vihar Government High School, S.K.S.R Govt. High School for girls, DSM School and Kudus Urdu Municipal High School and Child Aid Foundation Vijaya Bharathi School, Vijayawada. Over 1000 High School students were benefited by this programme.
Serve while you learn:
To promote the habit of Serve While You Learn the Chemistry Club, Analyte adopted RCM Aided Elementary School and Amma vadi, a Home for destitutes and Street children. Students and Faculty donated uniform and sweets on the occasion of Joy of Giving Week at Salem house, an orphanage, Vijayawada.
Earn while you learn:
The students of the department prepared Sri Durga Products, small scale cleansing materials like Surf, Phenyl, Soap Oil etc. and the concept of Earn While You Learn was put into practice. Besides catering to the needs of the college and hostels surplus stocks are marketed to the user public. Home makers and Dwakra Groups are trained in making these products for domestic use and students develop entrepreneurship skills through these programs. Revenue generated by sales is utilized for paying college fees to economically backward students of the college.
Eco friendly programmes:
The members of Analyte Club has been Celebrating World’s Ozone Day on 16th September since 2006 to create Environmental awareness among the students. The department also conducted Bio-Fashion show and celebrated Eco-Friendly week. On the eve of World’s Ozone Day, the department has been conducting painting, debate, elocution, essay writing and poster presentation competitions, seminars, guest lectures, debates and cycle rallies for the past 15 years.
The department has MOU with Jana Vignana Vedika and done many social activities. The students dressed themselves like scientists and participated in a rally to convey the message that science is for construction and not for destruction on the eve of National Science Day i.e on February 28th 2011 in collaboration with Jana Vignana Vedika.
The department also conducted state level competitions CHEM-FEST and Science-Quest and many knowledge extension programmes, Guest lectures, Seminars and Workshops to improve subject knowledge and communication skills.
The department is providing Online MSc entrance coaching for chemistry cluster students. More than 70% of Chemistry students opted M.Sc Chemistry in various Universities. A number of Alumnae are serving in esteemed positions and settled in Educational institutions, different Chemical Laboratories and also in Government Organisations like Environmental and Horticulture departments.
